As you most likely already know it can be hard to find a job as a felon in today’s world. Don’t lose hope though because there are companies out there that will hire you. In the below article we will answer the question does UPS hire felons.
Does UPS Hire Felons? Answers Here!
Short Answer: Yes, UPS does hire felons for a number of different entry level positions including package handlers, driver helpers and seasonal positions. This does not mean they will hire all felons, it only means that they do not have a blanket policy against hiring felons.
First hand experiences
A few points to keep in mind when you are applying for jobs, this includes UPS and other companies. A company may employ a person with a felony but that will not hire everyone that has a felony. UPS will take into account many factors when considering you for a job/employment.
A few of these factors may include:
- Length of time since the completion of your sentance
- Type of felony conviction or specific charges
- If you have multiple felonies
While we were researching information about UPS we did uncover some some interesting information about UPS and their practices regarding their hiring process.
One source we found had this to say about UPS and felons:
“They hired me as a felon (grand theft) and gave me full time benefits and everything I could ever ask for. Amazing…. ”
Source: Glassdoor
Another source we found also was very encouraging and said:
“When I was working as a PO [Parole Officer] in Indianapolis I often referred my guys there and they usually hired them. It may be part-time, but they pay pretty good (it’s warehouse work) and have a great tuition repayment plan. It seemed like they were always hiring because it was hard, physical work and a lot of people didn’t stay very long. So give that a shot.”

Background Check Limits
It is important to understand that some states have laws regarding how far back a criminal background check can go. Here are the laws.
Twelve states do not allow any felony conviction information older than seven years to be reported.
- California
- Colorado*
- Kansas*
- Maryland*
- Massachusetts
- Montana
- Nevada
- New Hampshire*
- New York *
- Texas *
- Washington*
(* exceptions based on pay/salary)
Some states will not report court cases where you were found NOT guilty: Hawaii, Indiana, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Alaska, California, New York and Michigan.
These states will report unlimited numbers of years back of felony convictions and also report NOT guilty verdicts: Mississippi, Missouri, Nebraska, New Jersey, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oregon, Rhode Island, Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, Connecticut, Delaware, DC, Florida, Idaho, Indiana, Iowa, Louisiana, Maine, South Carolina, Tennessee, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia, Wisconsin, and Wyoming.
The official policy from UPS
We also spoke with a UPS company representative and was told that they do not have a blanket policy against hiring felons and that each applicant will be considered on a case by case basis. This is great news for felons.
If you are a convicted felon applying for a job at UPS you will most likely have the best luck by applying for part time warehouse positions. This is a labor intensive job that will be nothing but hard work day in and day out. Remember though you will be getting your foot in the door and this will lead you to much better positions and possibly into management.
For UPS is there is some kind of felony that they don’t consider for employment?
Any thing that deals with theft. Robbery etc. Was at UPS last week and that what HR told me
Anything that deals with theft what ? That they do or dont
Look any of you people that lie about your record dot be shocked if you get fired later on when they find out for being dishonest
will UPS hire you if you have a class b misdeameanor
Do you know if the just do a state background check or both federal and state background check??
My situation, I’m retired from the government-military (Marine Corps) after well over 30 years service. I discharged a firearm in my apt in 2012 when someone attempted to kick in my door, nobody was injured, though my door suffered a minor gunshot wound in the deadbolt steel plate (oops), I reported the incident to police, which lead to a media and prosecutor circus of shenanigans, mainly based on my military background, they thought a vet went off on a tangent movie style I guess :: rolling eyes ::. To get it over with, I pleaded to assault with a deadly weapon, felony (assault on a door no less). I applied to the San Bruno hub in 2014 as a preloader, was informed that UPS is a second chance employer, and was hired, the commute was expensive, and long. So, I left the hub, and just remained retired for awhile. Last month an opening came up for preloader at the UPS building within a 10 minute walk from my home, I applied, they informed me I had positive rehire, and I’ve been working there as preloader for the past 3 weeks, and in line for drivers helper for the holinights. So, that’s my UPS info. I wouldn’t mind working longer hours, or moving to another position later, I’m mainly supplementing my pension, want to be independent, and put money away for my youngest daughters college and trust funds. They say it’s really hard work, but seems pretty much like regular heavy lifting physical work to me, maybe that’s just my generation-Marine background talking (56 years old) 😉 Just thought I’d throw my 2 cents in, from an SF Bay Area, CA perspective with what happened.
Thank you for your service and thank you for the info!
I have a CDL and have been an over the road driver for over two years. I have a good driving record (no accidents, tickets, etc.), and I’m about 10 months away from being off paper. I was released from the Feds 3 years ago (drug charge). Do you know if UPS would hire me as a driver? Over the road, or local?
Thank you for your info and your time.
I am not sure to be honest, I think that UPS is pretty picky about their commercial drivers though. This site may help you:

Just wanted to take the time to thank you for your service to this great country. My fiancee served in the Navy for 4 years I’m damn proud of her
I have applied with UPS on a number of occasions as well as having a couple of Interviews. Each time, they have informed me that my background check came back as ineligible, meaning they cannot hire me. I have always been able to get to the point where they want to hire me for the position but then say they cannot due to my background even though my conviction was almost 7 years ago, and I have held Management positions in charge of money and other large responsibilities, yet I cannot get a job at UPS, not even as a driver helper. Will continue to try and hopefully I can relay positive information and maybe tips on how to get in with UPS as a felon.
That’s very frustrating to say the least!
My husband has the same problem and his felony was over 10 years ago. I dont understand why there is not a law against discrimination for past offenses? They never tell us what about his record keeps him ineligible. Does anyone know what rights we have?
From what I was told last year at a UPS interview, they go back 10 years. At the very beginning of the interview, the recruiting person said that right up front. If you have a record under 10 years old then consider leaving now. That’s pretty up front if you ask me.
You’re welcome. Glad to be of help.
Yes, UPS will hire felons, but you have to prepare very well for the interview. Memorize a strong introduction and know that good timing is everything. That means know exactly how to present your felony to the interviewer. And don’t go into all the details of what happened, just keep it very brief. Consider picking up a copy of “Interview Like A Boss” which is a guide for felons. It’s quite popular and has all the introductions ready-to-go and explains how to score an A+ at the interview. The author’s name is Hans Van Nas. Good luck.
Thank you so much for the information!
