Tips for Getting a Job With a Felony

Getting a job with a felony record is hard, like it can be a total Pain in the ___, but it is not impossible. Thousands of people with criminal records get hired every day, no this is not a lie… Ok maybe not thousands but….

Joking aside you can get a job with a felony. The key is knowing how to approach the process strategically instead of emotionally.

Here are the most effective, real-world tips.

1. Apply to the Right Industries

Not all employers run background checks, some who do still hire people with felonies. You have to look for jobs that you can get, not necessary want.

Focus on these industries:

  • Construction and trades
  • Restaurants and food service
  • Landscaping and maintenance
  • Transportation (some companies) Trucking Companies
  • Temp agencies
  • Small businesses

Avoid wasting time applying to places that have strict corporate background policies unless you already know their felony policies.

2. Staffing & Temp Agencies

Temp agencies are one of the fastest ways for felons to get working. Not every agency will be felon friendly but some are.

  • Many do not run background checks
  • The employer often only sees your performance
  • Temp jobs often turn into permanent jobs

Once you prove yourself, the record matters less.

3. Be Honest — But Only When Required

Never lie if directly asked about your criminal history but never mention it unless specifically asked.

The correct time to disclose is:

  • On a background check form
  • When asked directly
  • After a conditional job offer that reqiures a background check.

4. Learn How to Explain Your Record

Have a short, rehearsed explanation:

Keep it:

  • Brief
  • Calm
  • Responsible

Example:

“I made a mistake several years ago. I took responsibility, completed my sentence, and I’ve been working hard to rebuild my life. I’m focused on my future and being a dependable employee.”

Do not over-explain. Do not get emotional. More on explaining your criminal record.

5. Get Your Record Cleared

Many states allow you to “hide” or clear your criminal record. This is the most powerful tool available and can be life changing.

6. Look for Felon-Friendly Employers

Many websites list companies that claim to hire felons — but some lists are outdated or misleading. Many websites outright lie in order to get you on their site.

  • Small business employers
  • Companies that hire through staffing agencies
  • Employers known for second-chance hiring

Verify if you can. Simply google the name of the company with the words hire felons. Check our Jobs Page.

7. Network Instead of Applying

DO NOT overlook or blow off this advice! Start talking to everyone you know or come in contact with. Tell them you are looking for a career, job, gig or whatever. You never know who they know. Also reach out to organizations and groups.

  • Former employers
  • Family
  • Friends
  • Churches
  • Reentry programs
  • Trade schools
  • Businesses you frequintly visit

8. Build Work History Any Way You Can

Employers care more about what you did recently than what you did years ago. Have the attitude of get what I can now so I can have what I want later.

  • Take temp jobs
  • Work day labor
  • Do gig work
  • Volunteer – Last resort LOL
  • Work part-time

10. Remote Jobs

There are tons of remote jobs out there. Some do require background checks while others don’t. You can find anything from gigs to full time careers online.

10. Get Training in High-Demand Felon Friendly Career Fields

Some of the most felon-friendly careers are skilled trades. There are a ton of small companies that are in the construction/trade industry.

  • Welding
  • HVAC
  • Electrical
  • Trucking
  • Plumbing
  • Auto Repair
  • Body Repair
  • Cooking/Culinary Arts
  • Graphic Design

These industries need workers and they care about skills more than your past. Currently there are massive shortages within the trades which make getting a job much easier than in the past.
